The Centre de sécurité civile (Montréal civil protection centre - CSC for short) works to prevent major disasters and prepare the response and support needed if a disaster should occur, in collaboration with a number of partners. Civil protection is not just a concern for emergency responders, the boroughs and central municipal departments - it also concerns residents and businesses, who need to be aware of the precautions to take in the event of a major disaster.
More specifically, the CSC's work consists of developing policies, emergency plans, alert and mobilization procedures, organizing training and simulation exercises and finding solutions to improve risk management. As well, the CSC has a number of continuous monitoring tools to detect problematic situations quickly and respond proactively.
The island of Montréal is exposed to several disaster risks on a daily basis. Here are some examples:
- Major industrial accidents
- Accidents involving dangerous materials
- Extreme heat
- Flooding
- Epidemics and pandemics
- Extreme storms
- Earthquakes
The CSC is part of the SIM, and the SIM director becomes the civil protection coordinator when emergency measures are declared in the Montréal agglomeration.
Montréal's civil protection centre presents this video that demystifies civil protection and answers questions, such as what type of disasters could occur on the island of Montréal? How are emergency measures organized and how should we prepare for a disaster?
