Raoul Gauthier succeeded Joseph F. Chevalier as chief of the Montréal fire department. In 1928, his title was changed to director of the fire department. He held this position from July 12, 1923 until to June 17, 1932, when he died in duty during the explosion of the Cymbeline oil tanker.
