Spring flooding season is upon us, and the SIM has launched a prevention campaign in areas that were affected by floods in 2017 as well as certain high-risk areas in order to help residents learn how to prepare for an emergency.

Awareness campaign operations will take place on April 9, 10, 16 and 17.

First, SIM prevention teams will head out to meet residents in Pierrefonds-and Ahuntsic-Cartierville on April 9 and 10. They will continue the door-to-door campaign in Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève, Senneville and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.

Officers will pass out a brochure that explains what they should do before, during and after a flood. Residents who are not home will receive a door hanger referring them to
online educational materials.

SIM officers will also check smoke detectors in homes and give smoke detectors and batteries to residents who do not have them. Buildings that could be used during a flood, such as multi-service centres and emergency shelters, will also be visited.

At the end of this campaign, officers will have visited 3,000 homes to prepare them for the next time flooding is imminent.

Be prepared for an emergency

A few simple steps can help residents be organized and independent for a few days during a disaster. A family emergency plan will help you determine what each family member needs to do and where to go in the event of an evacuation.

Preparing an emergency kit of basic items is essential to meeting your family’s needs for at least 72 hours.

With the free Montréal – Resident Services app, you can receive notices and alerts about emergency services, unexpected events, snow removal and traffic.
